Retrieval, or RAG, is the practice of pulling in specific outside information before a language model answers, instead of relying only on training.
Retrieval-augmented generation lets a system look up a business's own records, past quotes, policies, product details, before drafting a response, so the answer reflects that business specifically rather than generic knowledge. A quoting system using retrieval might pull the actual price list before drafting a quote email.
